The Project:
Built in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, these two concrete arterial highway bridges were in need of both seismic retrofitting and repairs. The bridges span two canyons, which are regulated by various State and County agencies.
When originally designed, the west bridge over Flint Canyon required two concrete “link beams” below the existing bridge. The link beams were CIP concrete structures, 8ft wide by 7ft high and 62ft long, and were to be located 30ft to 40ft above the surface of the canyon. One of the requirements of the Department of Fish and Game was that there would by very limited access and no shoring or scaffolding in the canyon during the rainy season, which presented a major scheduling hurdle to the project being able to move forward.
T.B. Penick assisted the County and Caltrans in achieving a new acceptable design, which was less costly and slightly faster to complete than the original. The re-design effort enabled the project to start on time, and it is currently on schedule. |
