The Project:
San Francisco State University had a major challenge in how best to seismically upgrade and expand its Sutro Library. Because the structure had been built in stages between 1950 and 1968, and all additions utilized different structural support systems, the goal of the project was to seismically connect all sections of the building and to create a new core that would strengthen the entire system. However, the construction plan specified in the RFP was unbuildable as scheduled, as it provided no structural support for the existing structure while under construction. TB Penick’s in-house designers and structural engineers developed a new design-build strategy to address the design, structural and cost issues, ultimately netting an overall budget reduction of $4 million.
