TBP’s Specialty Contracting Division vaults to 186 in national rankings:

ENR has ranked T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc. #186 among the nations Specialty Contractors, up from last year’s 296 spot.

SAN DIEGO – October 7, 2009 – Since last year, T.B. Penick’s Specialty Contracting Division has advanced 110 places – from #296 to #186 – in ENR’s ranking of the nation’s 600 top specialty contractors. The ranking is based on 2008 revenues and is featured in the October 7, 2009 issue of Engineering News Review (ENR)

ENR's Top 600 Specialty Contractors ranking is a comprehensive package of data and analysis. In addition to rankings by 2008 revenue of the 600 largest specialty contractors in the U.S., the list includes previous years’ rankings, revenue and the percentage of revenue by markets. There is also a statistical summary of the Top 600 by market category and tables with rankings of top specialty contractors by market or trade specialty, including electrical, mechanical, masonry, concrete, steel, excavation/foundation, glazing/curtain wall, utility, painting, wall/ceiling, roofing, sheet metal, demolition/wrecking and asbestos abatement.

The accompanying cover story discusses business developments affecting contractors, markets and industry issues. With the industry suffering from one of the worst recessions in decades, specialty contractors and subcontractors are among the hardest-hit, according to the article.

While 2008 was a record year for many, specialty backlogs generally do not extend out as far as the backlogs of general contractors and construction managers. Consequently subcontractors are beginning to feel pressure as they burn through existing work. This has left them scrambling to cope with a very soft market that shows few signs of firming.

“Our Specialty Contracting Division has had a banner year especially given this tough economic climate. Our employees continue to raise the bar on jobsite productivity and efficiency,” said Tim Penick, TBP’s President. “We are proud of their hard work and their success, especially in this turbulent economy.”
