T.B. Penick & Sons Adds LEED Accredited Professional To Management Team

Christina Palpal-Latoc receives certification from US Green Building Council

SAN DIEGO, CA – October 5, 2007 — T.B. Penick & Sons, one of Southern California’s largest concrete contractors, announced today the addition of Christina Palpal-Latoc; a new LEED Accredited Professional (AP). Christina, currently a Business Development Manager at T.B. Penick, received her certification from the US Green Building Council. LEED APs are building industry practitioners who have demonstrated their knowledge of green building practices and are able to facilitate the certification process through their familiarity with LEED requirements and resources. In her new role, Ms. Palpal-Latoc will be responsible for streamlining the building and certification process for projects undergoing the LEED rating system, as well as providing clients with information on the company’s environmentally conscious product lines.

“Christina’s achievement is an illustration of our company’s commitment to building towards an environmentally sustainable future,” said Tim Penick, President of T.B. Penick and Sons. “She provides a great resource for our clients, helping to maximize LEED credits by incorporating innovative products and building practices into each project.”

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ is the nationally accepted standard for the design, construction, and operation of high performance, environmentally sustainable buildings. The credit-based system allows projects to earn points for environmentally friendly actions taken during construction and use of a building.

T.B. Penick is already actively involved green construction. Two of Penick’s design-build projects were the first civic structures in San Diego County to receive LEED certification – the George L. Stevens Senior Center in Encanto was awarded Gold LEED certification, and the Northwestern Area Police Station in Carmel Valley obtained Silver LEED certification.

“I’m very pleased to be able to be able to contribute such an important aspect of T.B. Penick’s customer offering,” said Latoc. “Providing important insight into sustainable building projects will allow us to professionally guide clients through the LEED certification process for their various projects.”

Along with an experienced design-build team and an in-house green building consultant, T.B. Penick offers several specialty concrete products that can minimize a building’s environmental footprint. STF (Save the Fish) Porous Concrete is one such example – the pervious paving system eliminates polluted storm water runoff into the water table and reduces the amount of water used for outdoor landscaping. STF was recently chosen to pave the parking lot and driveway of the Del Sur Ranch House, a LEED Platinum-rated structure that is actively promoted as a showcase to encourage awareness of environmental stewardship. The pervious paving system, combined with low-water plants and efficient appliances, is estimated to save over 1 million gallons of water per year.
