T.B. PENICK & SONS, GENERAL CONTRACTOR, CONSTRUCTING THREE DESIGN/BUILD CHILD  CARE & YOUTH FACILITIES TOTALING $21,659,880 FOR THE NAVY

SAN DIEGO – October 1, 2009 – T.B. Penick & Sons, general contractors, is constructing three child care and youth facilities for the Navy totaling $21,659,880. at Lemoore Naval Air Station (NAS); El Centro Naval Air Facility (NAF); and, Chollas Heights Naval Housing Community in San Diego. Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) is providing contracting administration for the projects.

Demolition and construction on the $7,008,031. design/build expansion to the existing Child Development Center at Lemoore (NAS) is scheduled to begin in October. The building, designed by Domusstudio Architecture, features steel frame construction with light gauge metal studs, stucco exterior walls with a standing seam metal roof and is targeting gold (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) LEED certification.  Upon completion in August 2010, the 16,792- square-foot expansion will include ten activity rooms, laundry room, kitchen with full prep area and accommodate up to 88 children.  Bob Clair is the design project manager and Dan Curley is the construction project manager for T.B. Penick.  John Pyjar is the principal-in-charge with Domusstudio and Troy Schalge is the project architect.  Funding for the Lemoore facility is through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The $7,625,101. design/build Combined Child Care (CDC) and Youth Center at El Centro (NAF), now under construction, features a new single-story 12,077-square-foot facility to accommodate both children and youth activities.  The CDC will occupy 6,910-square-feet and provide a lobby, kitchen, offices, training room, laundry, activity rooms and outdoor activity areas.  The Youth Center will occupy 5,167-square-feet and feature a multi-purpose room, school age care activity room, snack bar, youth lounge, and outdoor activity area.   The project, designed by Cass, Sowatsky, Chapman + Associates (CSC+A), is seeking LEED Silver certification and will be completed in July 2010.  Owen Bingham is the design manager for T.B. Penick with Terry Hunt, project manager; Pat Donovan, superintendent; and, Mike Bagwell, quality control supervisor.  Mark Sowatsky is the principal-in-charge at CSC+A and Nate Vandermeulen, design associate.  The El Centro project is Military Construction funded.

Construction of the $7,026,748. Child Development Center at Chollas Heights has passed the mid-way mark and is scheduled for completion in December.  The 12,425-square-foot single-story, wood framed building is located on the 75-acre Chollas Heights Naval Family Housing.  The project is seeking silver LEED certification and features offices, classrooms, lockers, full kitchen, playground area and parking lot and will serve as a preschool for 112, three- to five-year-olds from families in the nearby naval housing.   Domusstudio Architecture is the architect with John Pyjar, as principal-in-charge. T.B, Penick’s team includes:  John Tiersma, project manager; Tom Donovan, superintendent; and, Eduardo Valdez, construction quality control; and, Shawn Burnett, project administrator.  This project is receiving Base Realignment and Closure funding.
