T.B. PENICK & SONS, GENERAL CONTRACTOR COMPLETES $24.5 MILLION DESIGN/BUILD DOUBLE HANGAR PROJECT AT EL CENTRO NAVAL AIR FACILITY NINE MONTHS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

EL CENTRO, California– August 25, 2009 – T.B. Penick & Sons General Contractors has completed construction on a $24.5 million design/build contract for two double-bay modular hangars at the Naval Air Facility in El Centro nine months ahead of schedule, according to Terry Hunt, project manager for T.B. Penick.

Each hangar, approximately 32,640 square-feet in size, includes a 41 foot-tall bay aircraft maintenance area with adjacent two-story structure housing maintenance and administrative areas. The modular-type construction consists of pre-engineered metal building panels with a concrete masonry exterior.

Features include overhead bridge crane, job cranes, roof vents and ladders, power operated roll up doors, 400HZ electrical, water, heating, air conditioning and special AFFF foam dispensing fire protection system.

The project, underway since November 2008, will house the Blue Angels/Joint Strike Force aircraft and provide support to Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, and foreign squadrons (including the British, Dutch and other NATO allies).

In addition to Hunt, T.B. Penick construction team includes project superintendents Bob Clair and Pat Donovan with Mike Bagwill serving as quality control representative.

NAVFAC Southwest team included: Melinda Russell, FEAD Director and professional engineer; Jacque Pemberton, contract specialist; Ed Cooney, lead engineer technician; Eric Pemberton, engineer technician; Linda Graham, contracting officer; and Howard Sweatte, AIA, project and design manager.

Cass, Sowatsky, Chapman + Associates was the project architect with Wyatt Chapman, AIA as Principal, LEED-AP, and Matthew Buster as project manager.

Major subs included: Ancon Building Group, Helfers Electric, Alpha Mechanical, Bowcon Company, SimplexGrinnell, A&P Drywall, San Diego Door & Hardware, Inc., and Byron Epp.
