T.B. Penick/Triton Structural Concrete awarded
contract for reconstruction of historic Harlem amphitheater
SAN DIEGO, California – April 28, 2010 – T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc., through its affiliate Triton Structural Concrete, has been awarded a $5.2 million contract for renovation of the famed amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park in Manhattan, New York. Cooper, Robertson & Partners is the architect on the project. The contract was let by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation.
The overall scope of the renovation project includes demolition of the existing bandshell, construction of a new bandshell and back-of-house facilities, and modifications to the existing amphitheater as well as site work, lighting and landscaping.
Triton will construct the new fixed amphitheater seating and install a floating fabric roof canopy, supported by a series of masts and tension cables and a system of cable-supported fabric shades. Triton will also replace the existing audience benches with new seatback-benches made of durable recycled plastic.
Marcus Garvey Park is one of the oldest public squares in Manhattan and is a well-used neighborhood resource. The original amphitheater dates back to 1969. It was a gift from American Composer Richard Rogers, who grew up across the street. Located at Pelham Fritz Recreation Center in Marcus Garvey Park, the amphitheater seats 1,600 and is designed to accommodate a 75-person orchestra.
Currently, the stage layout limits performances, sight lines are poor, and there is no shade for audiences. The new design corrects the geometry of the bandshell, creates a wider stage closer to the audience, and provides greater comfort and more amenities.
