T.B. PENICK & SONS, GENERAL CONTRACTOR, ANNOUNCES CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY ON $7 MILLION DESIGN/BUILD CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER AT CHOLLAS HEIGHTS.
SAN DIEGO – April 06, 2009 — T.B. Penick & Sons General Contractors, one of San Diego’s most established family-owned contractors, has announced construction is underway on the $7 million design/build Child Development Center at Chollas Heights for the Department of the Navy. The 12,425-square foot one-story, wood-framed building, designed by domusstudio architecture of San Diego, is located within the 75-acre Chollas Heights Naval Housing Family Housing Community that was once home to three historic U.S. Navy transmitting towers that provided radio communications with the fleet at sea and shore radio stations for the Naval Communications Systems from 1916 to 1992. Upon completion in December 2009, the facility will serve as a preschool for 112, three to five-year-olds from families in the nearby naval housing.
According to John Pyjar, principal-in-charge for domusstudio, the preschool was designed to blend with the surrounding housing and features Spanish-style architecture with a contemporary feel. Central to the design is a main path leading to a feature wall decorated with playful, graphic patterns, textures and undulating lines resembling waves and the sky culminating into the bow of a ship.
A LEED certified project, the Center features offices, classrooms, lockers, full kitchen, playground area and parking lot. The school site is located near the Chollas Heights lake park.
T.B, Penick’s team includes: John Tiersma, project manager; Tom Donovan, superintendent; Eduardo Valdez, construction quality control; and, Shawn Burnett, project administrator.
